Airlines Twitter
It's interesting to see the evolution of social media sites like Twitter in terms of the airlines. A few have really embraced Twitter, while most still don't seem to be taking full advantage of its format. For quick snippets of info, relaying timely news on regular events such as delays, even airfare deals, the immediacy of Twitter works really well.
Even though it isn't as widely used as some other social media sites like Facebook, Twitter seems made for the airlines - updates of 140 characters or less for posting a public message. Quick and easy.
There is a lot to wade through in terms of Twitter, and not all airline pages that are up are actually officially affiliated with the airline. When I first joined Twitter, and as I continue on it, I find myself constantly going through new pages and old, trying to find ones that are consistently updated and solid for information. The result of my efforts is my own top 10 airline pages on Twitter...

The evening of August 24, 2010, Henan Airlines flight 8387 enroute from Harbin, Heilongjiang, China to Yichun Lindu Airport was set to land. Several dozen survivors of the 91 passengers and 5 crew were rescued in a crash that claimed the lives of 42 people.

Note that there are conflicting numbers regarding the actual number of people who died in this crash - 41, 42 or 43 - I will update if the number changes once confirmed by Chinese authorities. Merger is a 3 Letter Airline - Possible Merger of 2 South American Airlines
The 3 letter airline (well, both parties actually) is LAN, which is looking to merge with TAM. Over the years, LAN has grown from a Chilean airline, to one that is the dominant, flagship carrier of several South American countries such as Peru. TAM, a Brazilian airline, eclipsed one-time giant Varig Brasil, with its low airfares. The two airlines together would form an airline of scope and size unprecedented in South America.
Currently, the potential merger is awaiting the go ahead of shareholders and regulators, but given the trend to merge that seems to be happening with many airlines around the world, it seems almost natural that South American airlines would look to consolidate and solidify their position vis-a-vis other bigger global players.
Air Transport World offers a detailed look of the next big merger on the horizon.
Other recent mergers include - United Airlines / Continental Airlines. Merger is a 3 Letter Airline - Possible Merger of 2 South American Airlines originally appeared on About.com Air Travel on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 at 00:31:02. Permalink | Comment | Email this |
